Key lessons: putting them into action

There are quite a few lessons to be drawn from the success stories of others with the condition, so what is to be done about putting them into action? You certainly want to copy the things that you have seen other people do. After all, if they have managed to do it, then why should you not be able to do the same?

Get a clear understanding of the impact of the condition on the individual

The first step is to ensure that you understand the effect of the condition on the individual in question; only in this way can you hope to offer useful assistance, help them move towards a better future, and aid them in overcoming the various problems associated with ADHD. If you fail to understand the condition and their situation, the help you provide will be misguided and will only make life more difficult.

Make sure you work out a plan with them

Drawing up a plan of action and then suddenly presenting it to the person with the condition, without giving them any warning, would be wrong. Research has demonstrated that plans and solutions are more likely to succeed when the individual with the condition is fully involved in the planning process from the outset. It also helps to make sure the decisions to be made include options that are advantageous, regardless of which one is selected.

Bring to their attention the stories of successful cases

It’s important to bring to their attention the various success stories you’ve read, since this will help them notice the positive aspects of those stories and carry out the same actions in their own lives. Reminders are wonderful in many ways, so make sure you make use of them.

Think of it as something you are still working on

If you look more closely at the stories mentioned above, you will notice another common theme: people realise they are still developing. They know that they have made some progress in certain areas, but they still have difficulty with concentrating, getting organised or whatever other issue it may be. It is essential that they be made aware that no situation is final and that there is always more work to be done, even though they will gain long-term benefits.
