ADHD assessments in the school setting

Our mission is to reduce the long-term complications of ADHD through early assessment and management. That is why we specialise in ADHD assessments for primary school children, collaborating directly with schools and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinators (SENDCOs).

Based on our experience, conducting assessments within the school environment benefits children and enhances diagnostic accuracy. It:

  • Minimises disruption and stress to children.
  • Is more convenient for parents.
  • Enables closer collaboration with SENDCOs and teachers.
  • Gives a better understanding of the child in their everyday environment.

Where our model began

We completed a collaborative project with St Robert Southwell Catholic Primary School in Brent, assessing 25 children with suspected ADHD within the school setting. This initiative provided the foundation for our assessment model.

How a school-based assessment works

From the first coffee morning to the assessment itself, we work with the school’s SENDCO at every step.

A coffee morning for parents

We begin by hosting a coffee morning for parents of children showing concerning symptoms. We discuss ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions, outline our comprehensive assessment model and explain our approach to Strengths & Needs Profiling, emphasising the importance of understanding each child as an individual when developing their management plan.

Registration

Following the meeting, interested parents provide their contact details for registration.

Planning with the SENDCO

We then collaborate directly with the SENDCO to organise the assessment and ensure that all required questionnaires are completed in advance.

Assessment day

One hour

On the day, we conduct a one-hour narrative session with the child, who then returns to class to minimise disruption to their educational day. Occasionally we need specific additional information from the teacher afterwards, which the SENDCO team coordinates.

In school, at our clinic or online

School is where we prefer to assess primary school children, but families can also choose our clinic or an online assessment.

In school

Our preferred setting

Our school-based model: the assessment takes place on site during the school day, coordinated with the SENDCO.

At our clinic

At the Child and Family Practice in Bloomsbury, central London.

Online

Online assessments are available for parents and children who prefer this option.

Next: the school-based model at scale

Having completed our school collaboration project with St Robert Southwell, we are now seeking to undertake a larger project in partnership with the NHS. Our aim is to demonstrate the benefits of the school-based assessment model at scale, as we believe it provides the optimal environment for assessing primary school children.
